As a staple drink in East-Asian culture, this cleansing tea has made its mark in the modern western diet, with plenty of varieties now on offer in supermarkets and coffee shops across Britain. It can speed up weight loss
Packed with powerful antioxidants and naturally high in caffeine, the fat-burning benefits of green tea are unmatched.
Flavonoids are a key ingredient when it comes to burning fat, and a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN) has shown that green tea could be the key to boosting your flavonoid intake.
The results showed that higher intakes of flavonol were associated with a more favourable fat mass distribution, and showed a positive relationship between flavonoids and weight loss in obese participants.
According to the medically accredited website Healthline, green tea extract can increase the rate at which the body burns calories while also increasing fat oxidation by around 17 percent.

Research studies into the positive effects of green tea have found that these powerful antioxidants can reduce the risk of both breast cancer, prostate cancer and even colorectal cancer.

According to Healthline, various studies have concluded that:
- Drinking plenty of green tea can reduce the risk of breast cancer in women by around 20-30 percent
- Men who drink green tea on a regular basis have a significantly lower risk of experiencing advanced prostate cancer
- People who drinks green tea are around 42 percent less likely to develop colorectal cancer
While the observational studies have found a clear link between green tea consumption and the reduced risk of cancer, more in-depth research is needed to confirm the exact quantities in which this is effective.
It can protect against cardiovascular disease
The antioxidant qualities of green tea come into play again here, with a number of studies showing a significant reduction in the main risk factors of cardiovascular diseases.
Healthline said: “Studies show that green tea may improve some of the main risk factors for heart disease and stroke which includes improving total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels.
“Green tea also increases the antioxidant capacity of the blood, which protects the LDL particles from oxidation, which is one part of the pathway toward heart disease.”
Ditching the sugary coffee and black tea for a refreshing cup of green could have impressive results, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease by up to 31 percent.
