James has made a name for himself as a chef who does not like to make half-hearted dishes. His use of butter and oil sometimes shocks viewers, but the final result of the chef’s meals are never short of delicious. Off screen, the chef is overly critical of his image. The Saturday Morning presenter has also faced mockery from online trolls for being “fat”. It was this and his involvement in Strictly Come Dancing that led to his mammoth weight loss.

In between serving up sweet treats on This Morning the star lost an incredible six stone.

His transformation began when he first started dancing reality show Strictly Come Dancing, weighing in reportedly at 19st 7Ib.

In just a week it was said that the chef had already lost a stone in weight, losing a further four throughout the competition. Speaking about his weight loss journey he said: “I lost five stone in seven weeks. I mean, I needed to!”

The chef continued to say how he has also been a victim of online trolling. If getting mocked by trolls wasn’t enough he was also incredibly critical when he caught a glimpse of himself in HD.

He told the DailyMail: “I just think it’s a lifestyle thing and also looking at yourself on TV. You get critical of yourself. You kind of watch and go, ‘Oh, God there’s a bit of a chin happening there’. And everybody’s TVs are bigger now.

“Before you used to watch TV on a small one and now they’re massive.”

James also opened up about his weight during an interview on Loose Women – when asked whether his mum was critical of his looks when she watched him on TV, he replied: “100 percent, hence I’m wearing a jacket!

“Weight is quite a big issue.

“Now she’s got a big TV. It never used to be a problem when she had a little TV. It’s all relative. HD is horrific.

“I’ve never been a little lad. That’s the way I am.”

Amidst the tough Strictly exercise routine, the chef made changes to his diet to help stay slim, including cutting out butter and cutting back on fatty foods.

Keeping fit and active is something he kept motivated to do even after he was voted out of the dancing competition.

Earlier this year the chef added: “It’s hard work because I’m a big bloke so I’ve really got to watch what I eat and drink, and make sure I exercise regularly.”

According to Onaverage, the average weight of an adult man in the UK is 13st 3Ib (83.9 kilos). However a healthy weight depends on the height of the individual person.

Bupa states that the most common way of measuring if you’re a healthy weight for your height is to calculate your body mass index (BMI).

BMI is used to estimate if you’re a healthy weight for your height and is classified as follows:

Less than 18.5 = underweight
18.5–24.9 = healthy weight
25–29.9 = overweight
30– 39.9 = obese
Over 40 = morbidly obese

Although BMI can give you a rough indication of your health, there are limiting factors. This digit does not take into account how much you exercise, your age or your gender, so for some it can be an overestimate and for others an underestimate.

Having a lot of muscle can mean you end up with an extremely high BMI because you naturally weigh more. But in reality you have very little body fat.

The NHS provides 12 tips on how to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. They include:

  1. Do not skip breakfast
  2. Eat regular meals
  3. Eat plenty of fruit and veg
  4. Become more active
  5. Drink plenty of water
  6. Eat foods high in fibre
  7. Read food labels
  8. Use a smaller plate
  9. Do not stock up on junk food
  10. Cut down on alcohol
  11. Plan your meals
  12. Do not ban any foods from your weight loss plan.
