First, research established in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition noted how flavonoid-rich foods, such as dark chocolate, increased flow-mediated dilatation after intake, in addition to lowering blood pressure readings. A blood pressure reading, such as 140/90mmHg, consists of the systolic (140) and diastolic (90) blood pressure reading that is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). The researchers noted that chocolate reduced systolic blood pressure up to 9mmHg and diastolic blood pressure up to 6mmHg.

Moreover, the review of studies found that flavonoid-rich cocoa improved several markers of heart health over the short term.

However, the meta-analysis of 133 trials would benefit from a “long enough duration” of the health effects of eating cocoa-rich products.

Medical News Today highlighted that dark chocolate and cocoa powder are rich in flavonoids, which are compounds that help blood vessels to dilate.

Widened blood vessels would enable blood to flow more freely across the body.

Too much of a good thing can turn the delicious treat into more of a health hazard.

Eating too much chocolate can lead to weight gain, health experts warned, which increases the risk of disease.

Chocolate can contain lots of calories, sugar, and fat, meaning not only can you put on a bit of weight, you can also suffer from tooth decay.

It is the sugar content, specifically, that can lead to tooth decay and weight gain.

Yet, even dental experts can agree that research shows a small bit of chocolate could actually be beneficial for your teeth.

Icon Dental Group noted that chocolate contains cocoa bean husk extract that has been “proven to strengthen enamel”.

What’s tooth enamel?

Popular toothpaste brand Colgate pointed out that tooth enamel is made up of the mineral hydroxyapatite.

Enamel is known as the “hardest substance” in your body, which covers each tooth and provides a “tough outer layer”.

As well as hydroxyapatite, the tooth enamel contains magnesium, sodium, fluoride, and carbonate.

Colgate explained: “Enamel protects the inner, more fragile areas of your teeth, known as dentin and pulp.

“It is the first and most important line of defence against tooth decay. If your enamel is damaged, you could develop cavities, temperature sensitivity, and even tooth infection.”

Enamel degrades from plaque bacteria, excess sugars, and acidic substances in drinks or foods.

Icon Dental made clear that enamel enriching benefits of chocolate is reserved for “good quality chocolate”.

The teeth experts added that “cheap chocolate will be full of sugar” that will “outweigh any benefits that chocolate may have”.

To gain the health benefits of chocolate, including protected enamel, “look for the chocolate that has a high cocoa percentage”.

Moreover, even chocolates with a high cocoa percentage should be enjoyed in “moderation”.
