Black Friday home weights set deals: Stock updates and latest discounts

Finding a good Black Friday home weights set deal is a great way to get fit and healthy. Strength training is widely recommended by fitness and medical professionals.

According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans issued by the US Department of Health and Human Services, adults should do muscle-strengthening activities of moderate or greater intensity involving all major muscle groups on two or more days a week – a useful answer if you’re wondering how often you should work out.

The good news is that you don’t need to go to the gym to do a strength workout – with a home weights set deal you can work your muscles without leaving the comfort of your home. With so much variety available you’re sure to be able to find a home weights set to suit you.

Before you buy a home weights set you’ll need to consider your budget, fitness goals and the amount of space available. You’ll often find good deals on home weights sets but prices vary enormously from equipment suitable for heavy commercial use to light weights for cardio workouts, so choose carefully. For an all-round set you can expect to pay anything between less than $50 for a basic set of adjustable dumbbells to more than $1,000 for a professional set-up.

Which home weights set is best for you?

If you’re new to strength training, then you can’t go wrong with a set of dumbbells, as they’re perfect for trying out different home workout ideas. These can be fixed or adjustable. Adjustable dumbbells can involve swapping different plates in and out or they may be selectorized (where you adjust the weight by moving a pin up or down or turning a dial).

While exercises such as bike riding can build glutes, weight lifting can also make for a great low impact workout. This is because it can help strengthen your joints rather than putting undue strain on them.

However, you’ll want to consider the range of weights available in a set – you should allow for some progression to heavier weights, but even if you don’t think you need them, do include lighter weights for higher-rep, cardio workouts or to allow for injury. You should also pay attention to the surface. Some metal-coated dumbbells can rip your hands – if you want to avoid that, look for foam or neoprene-coated dumbbells.

Barbells may look scary and professional, but for some exercises they’re easier to control than two dumbbells, and you don’t need to load them with heavy weights. Some multipurpose sets incorporate interchangeable dumbbells and barbells, though these are not recommended for the more serious weightlifter.

Kettlebells can be great for mixing up your workout. It’s best to get a set rather than buying adjustable ones, because you want the weight distribution within them to remain static. Finally, medicine balls can be a useful home weights set. You can use them both for movements like medicine ball slams and abs workouts.

With all types of home weights set, consider what storage you will have. It’s often worth investing in a rack so you don’t end up tripping over your weights.

Geemax adjustable dumbbell & barbell deal

Geemax adjustable dumbbell & barbell

Best for versatility

Features: : 2 x dumbbell bars; 1 x extension bar; 8 weight plates | Materials: : polyethylene surface; iron pipe interior (dumbbells); cement filler (weight plates) | Maximum weight: : 22lb (other sets available with up to 66lb max) | Minimum weight: : smallest weight plate 2.2lb

This home weights set is hard to beat for an all-round workout set that won’t break the bank. Super-versatile, it allows you to swap between dumbbells and barbells by adding an extra bar, and the screw locks ensure a snug fit when the plates are in place.

The polyethylene surface means that you shouldn’t cut your hands to shreds when you’re working out, and users find it easy on the hands and simple to assemble and swap the different elements in and out.

This set is not for the serious weightlifter. Even the heavier version doesn’t provide much of a weight progression. It could also become tiresome switching between dumbbell and barbell with the connecting bar if you use both in the workout. But for a basic home workout it’s a useful piece of equipment that’s impressively easy on the wallet.

Fitness Republic neoprene dumbbell set deal

Fitness Republic neoprene dumbbell set

Best for versatility

Features: : 5 x pairs of neoprene coated dumbbells with a different color for each weight | Materials: : neoprene surface; cast iron interior | Maximum weight: : 12lb | Minimum weight: : 3lb

A useful set of five pairs of weights, from cardio- and beginner-friendly 3lbs up to the more challenging 12lbs. The ends are hexagonal in shape, which means they won’t roll around the floor (especially useful at home – no losing them under the couch!)

The advantage of the neoprene coating is two-fold. First, it doesn’t get slippery when you sweat, unlike rubber-coated ones, and secondly, it won’t rip your skin in the way that textured metal often does. Helpfully, each pair is in a different color so you can quickly identify which set you want to use.

You may wish to invest in a rack to store them on, as 10 dumbbells can take up a lot of floor space, which may be an unwelcome extra expense. Think about how far you’re likely to progress with your weight lifting in case you may eventually want something heavier than 12lb.

110lb adjustable barbell and dumbbell set deal

110lb adjustable barbell and dumbbell set

Best for classic home workout

Features: : 2 x dumbbell bars; 1 barbell in two parts; 6 collars; 16 plates | Materials: : steel bars; cast iron plates; polypropylene collars | Maximum weight: : 110lb (heaviest plates 11lb each) | Minimum weight: : lightest plates 1.1lb each; dumbbell bars 4.4lb each; barbell 34.4 lb total

Sometimes less is more, and if all you want is a classic full-body workout, this is a great set for home use. Featuring two dumbbell bars and one barbell (which comes in two parts that must be assembled), it has a variety of plates so you can customize your workout.

The collars are easy to get on and off and are less fiddly than spring clips, but you should be aware that the collars are designed to hold a maximum of 13.2lbs per dumbbell if you’re holding it in a vertical position, which may be limiting.

If you’re worried about sound, you might prefer rubberized plates rather than metal, and serious weightlifters might find the overall weight is insufficient, but for a basic set of weights they are good value and decent quality.

Best Choice Products 3-piece kettlebell set with storage rack deal

Best Choice Products 3-piece kettlebell set with storage rack

Best for value

Features: : 3 kettlebells and storage rack | Materials: : high-density polyethylene (HDPE) exterior; concrete interior | Maximum weight: : 15lb | Minimum weight: : 5lb

Kettlebell workouts are extremely popular and can provide a great, all-over workout.  This set of three kettlebells provides excellent value at less than $50, and the storage rack, which is included,  is a useful bonus feature.

The handles of these kettlebells are quite textured, which has the advantage of making them non-slip – great if you tend to sweat a lot – but some users find them too abrasive.

They are also very large which could be an issue if you’re short on space or have small hands. Overall, though, they’re a useful addition to any basic home workout set.

Lifeline First Aid medicine ball set with storage rack deal

Lifeline First Aid medicine ball set with storage rack

Best for mixing it up

Features: : 5 medicine balls and storage rack | Materials: : rubber exterior; hollow interior Maximum weight: 10lb | Minimum weight: : 2lb

The beauty of a medicine ball workout is that it provides several types of workout in one. From satisfying medicine ball slams to V-sits with a twist, they make building strength more fun.

This home weights set looks super-professional, with its classy black and red color scheme – it wouldn’t look out of place in a commercial gym. They are durable and tough and have a useful deflate function if you want to add a bit of bounce. Having five of them with a range between 2lb to 10lb makes them versatile, and the vertical storage rack means they won’t take up too much space.

The main downside is that although they have lots of applications you can’t do some classic weightlifting moves like back squats, but they are an excellent addition to an existing set-up.
